Hacienda Sotuta de Peon is a fabulous example
of a restored, working hacienda. On this trip you will see how the
henequen fiber is processed from the natural agave stalk to the
finished product of rope and twine. Yucatan’s henequen haciendas
produced 90% of the world’s production of twine in its heyday,
giving it the name “green gold” in the early 1900’s.
This tour will give you a good idea of Yucatan’s colonial
history.

HACIENDAS
Originally from the time of the “green gold” (around
the end of 1800), haciendas were born and made a living from the
henequén bonanza. By mid 1940, when synthetic fibers were
created, the henequén industry plummeted and with it, the
splendor of haciendas. In the last decade of the XX century, the
haciendas of Yucatan recovered economic growth and splendor, this
time as spots of perfect harmony for relaxation, reflection, and
meditation; but mostly to offer unique experiences to the visitors
of Yucatan.
In other times, machinery houses, today restaurants serving contemporary
Yucatan cuisine; before, stables and farmyards, now, pools and spas;
stately ranches of old, today real estate of peculiar charm from
Yucatan to the world.
To visit Hacienda Sotuta de Peon is to travel into the past and
go back to the history of haciendas of over 100 years ago. The trip
is done by truck, pulled by mules, with metallic wheels running
on long cauville rails. Extensive henequen plantations welcome us
as an introduction to the tour in which we will get to know closely
Sotuta de Peon, a live hacienda.
